8 Reasons why you should support the MUM Sustainable Living Center

1. It’s already received national press; it’s destined to be a nationally famous.

2. It fulfills MUM’s goals for scholarship in four prescribed ways:

a. Research – which continues to go into the development of the building, also the SLC will have a laboratory for research on sustainable living.

b. Integration –It is the only building in the world that integrates four sustainable construction standards: LEED Platinum, the Living Building Challenge, Maharishi Vedic Architecture and Building Biology.

c. Teaching – the SLC is a “building that teaches” - students are already learning from this building and this will only accelerate upon completion.

d. Application – The project will provide a new world standard for sustainable buildings that professionals and all who study the building can apply to their own projects, locally, nationally and globally.

3. It will give a huge recruitment impetus to MUM’s largest undergraduate program and key growth sector – the Sustainable Living Department.

4. Most universities pay lip service to sustainability because their architecture and engineering departments are funded by corporations that our part of the problem, building as usual. It is only a small private university like MUM, which is not beholding to these giant corporate interests, which can make the requisite bold departure from business as usual and demonstrate a truly sustainable building.

5. The building maximizes the intelligent use of the environment, which is one of the founding principles of MUM. It will demonstrate that consciousness-based education is providing solutions to the most critical problems facing our planet:

a. Climate – it is beyond carbon neutral, it is carbon positive. It is part of the solution and not part of the problem caused by conventional buildings.

b. Food – it demonstrates how organic food is grown in an urban environment using permaculture principles.

c. Water – it is self sufficient in water and will replenish the aquifer.

d. Waste – all waste from the building is handled either on site or in an environmentally responsible manner.

e. Economy – it employs local and regional materials, labor and expertise.

6. Our students and consciousness-based education deserves the best. This building does justice to our knowledge. “By their fruit ye shall know them”.

7. A highly dedicated team of faculty, staff, students and supporters have worked on this project for five years. We need to rise to support them to achieve their goal.

8. We need to this so that we can have a viable example to follow so we can build sustainable homes and buildings for ourselves, our children and our grand children and thereby sustain life on our planet in a progressive and abundant way.
